Imagine a world where billions of devices communicate seamlessly across vast distances with minimal power consumption, enabling everything from smart cities to precision agriculture. At the IoT Solutions World Congress (IOTSWC) in Barcelona last week, Semtech didn't just imagine this future—we demonstrated it in action with our revolutionary fourth-generation LoRa® technology.

From May 13-15, 2025, Barcelona became the global epicenter of IoT innovation as industry pioneers, tech visionaries, and business leaders gathered to witness the technologies that will reshape our connected world. Among the sea of innovations, Semtech's cutting-edge LoRa solutions captured the imagination of attendees with their unprecedented capabilities for AI-powered IoT deployments.

Pioneering the Future of IoT Connectivity

As part of the LoRa Alliance's "Building Massive IoT with LoRaWAN®" program, Semtech demonstrated how its latest advancements are revolutionizing connectivity for AI-powered IoT deployments globally. The company's booth featured hands-on demonstrations of the recently launched LoRa Plus™ LR2021 transceiver and LoRa Connect™ LR1121 solutions, showcasing the versatility and power of these innovations across multiple industry applications.

"The IoT Solutions World Congress provided the perfect venue to showcase how our latest LoRa innovations are transforming IoT deployments across industries," said Olivier Beaujard, LoRa Alliance board chair and senior director of LoRa ecosystem at Semtech. "Our demonstrations highlighted how Semtech's technologies enable unparalleled flexibility, connectivity and intelligence at the edge while maintaining the low power consumption and long-range characteristics for which LoRaWAN is well-known."

The star of Semtech's showcase was undoubtedly the LoRa Plus LR2021 transceiver with LoRa Gen 4 technology. This revolutionary chip supports both terrestrial and SATCOM networks across multiple frequency bands and offers increased data rates up to 2.6 Mbps at both 2.4 GHz and Sub-GHz ISM bands.

Industry analyst Shobhit Srivastava, senior principal analyst at Omdia, reinforced the significance of these innovations, noting that "LoRaWAN technology continues to cement its position as a global leader in the LPWAN market, with connections projected to reach 1.3 billion by 2030." Outside China, LoRaWAN remains the leading LPWAN connectivity technology due to its mature ecosystem and differentiated offerings.

Interactive Demonstrations That Wowed Attendees

Visitors to Semtech's booth experienced several compelling demonstrations that brought the practical applications of this technology to life:

  1. Image Transfer with FLRC: Attendees witnessed the game-changing fast long-range communication capabilities of the LR2021 (sub-GHz and 2.4GHz) and SX1280 (2.4GHz), enabling high-definition image transfer for applications ranging from security systems to remote monitoring.
  2. Ranging – Point-to-Point Distance Measurement: The demonstrations explored how the LR2021, LR1110, LR1120, and SX1280 deliver off-grid distance measurement capabilities critical for indoor positioning, asset tracking, and proximity-based applications.
  3. One-Channel Hub with LR1121: This innovative solution showcased dual spreading factor (SF) operation that simplifies connectivity for smart home and small-to-medium business applications, dramatically expanding LoRaWAN's market reach.
  4. Sustainable IoT with Energy Harvesting: Perhaps most impressive was the Modem-E v2.0 with Murata module and Dracula Technologies OPV energy harvesting demonstration, showing how the LR1121's integration with energy harvesting technologies enables truly sustainable IoT deployments with minimal maintenance requirements

Industry Insights: Safeguarding People and Planet

A highlight of the congress was the panel moderated by Olivier Beaujard titled "Safeguarding People and Planet with LoRaWAN." The discussion delved into real-world applications including managing solar panels, assessing wildfire risk in cities, monitoring soil humidity for optimized irrigation, and the automatic opening of shelters in war zones – all powered by LoRaWAN technology.

Semtech Team Members Honored at LoRa Alliance Contribution Awards

The LoRa Alliance announced the winners of its annual Contribution Awards during a live ceremony at IOT Solutions World Congress in Barcelona. These prestigious awards recognize individuals and companies for their leadership, service and contributions to the LoRa Alliance for the development and promotion of the LoRaWAN standard.

We're proud to announce that two of Semtech's own team members received well-deserved recognition:

  • Miguel Luis was recognized as Certification Committee Vice Chair for his outstanding service.
  • Rémi Demerlé received the Leadership Award for driving LoRaWAN adoption in the utilities vertical, a recognition shared especially with Akhil Garg for team efforts in regrouping LoRa Alliance and members to speak and exhibit in the Smart Utility Week of India.

These awards highlight not only the dedication of our team members but also Semtech's ongoing commitment to advancing the LoRaWAN standard and expanding its applications across diverse industries.

Looking Forward: The Growing LoRaWAN Ecosystem

Semtech's participation at IOTSWC underscored its commitment to driving the LoRaWAN standard forward as the premier solution for low-power wide-area networks. Through collaboration with the LoRa Alliance and its growing ecosystem of partners, Semtech continues to expand the possibilities for LoRaWAN applications across smart cities, industrial IoT, agriculture, utilities, and beyond.

As we move toward a more connected future, Semtech's innovations demonstrate how IoT technology can be both powerful and sustainable, offering solutions that address real-world challenges from climate monitoring and resource management to smart metering and asset tracking.
